Important Changes to Rodenticide Use in Australia from March 2026

Australian pest control regulations are changing — and at Formula Pest Control, we believe Melbourne homeowners and businesses should understand what these updates mean for rodent control moving forward.

Effective 24 March 2026, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) will introduce updated usage requirements for Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs).

These changes are designed to reduce risks to wildlife, pets, and the environment while ensuring rodent treatments remain effective and responsible.

What Are SGARs?

SGARs (Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides) are professional-grade rodent control products commonly used to manage rats and mice.

The active ingredients affected by the new changes include:

  • Brodifacoum
  • Bromadiolone
  • Difenacoum
  • Difethialone
  • Flocoumafen

These ingredients are found in many commonly used professional rodent baits across Australia.

Why Are These Changes Happening?

The APVMA has updated the regulations to reduce:

  • Secondary poisoning risks to wildlife
  • Exposure to pets and children
  • Environmental contamination
  • Incorrect or excessive bait usage

The goal is to encourage safer, more controlled rodent management practices across residential, commercial, and industrial properties.

Key Changes Effective 24 March 2026

From March 2026 onward, pest control professionals must follow stricter usage instructions when using SGAR products.

Important updates include:

Outdoor bait restrictions

  • Bait stations for mice must not be placed outdoors unless secured properly.
  • Outdoor bait must be inside tamper-resistant and weather-resistant bait stations.

Placement limitations

  • Bait stations cannot be placed more than 2 metres from buildings.
  • Rodenticide cannot be applied directly into burrows.

Safety requirements

  • Bait must not be accessible to pets, children, or non-target animals.
  • Disposable gloves must be worn during handling, cleanup, and carcass disposal.

Environmental protection

  • Dead rodents must be searched for and disposed of during each visit.
  • Slugs and snails near bait stations must also be managed to prevent secondary poisoning risks to wildlife.

Treatment duration limits

  • Continuous use beyond 35 days is not permitted without reassessing the infestation and treatment effectiveness.

What This Means for Melbourne Property Owners

For homeowners and businesses in Melbourne, these changes reinforce the importance of using licensed pest control professionals.

Rodent control is no longer simply about placing bait — it now requires:

  • Proper site assessment
  • Secure bait station placement
  • Wildlife-safe practices
  • Ongoing monitoring
  • Compliance with updated Australian regulations

DIY rodent control methods may not meet these new standards and can increase risks to pets, wildlife, and surrounding properties.
